What Does it Mean to Change?
Let's get started with some reflection exercises. Please reflect on the following questions and save your writings in a document titled What Does it Mean to Change? When you finish this course, we encourage you to go back to this document and compare your thinking from before and after.
Start with free word association and short phrases in response to the above questions.
Next, take some time to really think about what ideas you associate with the word 'change'. Is it different than what you think about with words and phrases like 'personal growth', 'accountability', or 'responsibility'? Consider the impact these words have on your body. Do they create any sensations or feelings? Do they bring up memories?
Now think about the ways in which you have changed throughout life, both actively and passively.
What brought about the changes? You might think about things like moving to a new city, starting a new job, life milestones like graduating from school or meeting a life partner, getting sick, losing friends or family members, etc. How did these changes feel?
In what ways has your personality changed in the last 10 years or so?
Were there things you once believed that you no longer believe? Are there habits that you worked to change? Did anyone or anything in particular inspire or support the change, for better or worse?
Is it possible to make the world a better place without waiting for the next generation to simply “be better"? How can we make the world a better place without just putting the onus on the next generation?
