Introduction

Part 3 of this course examines the psychology of behavior change. In this section, we will:

  • Reflect personally on our own need for change.
  • Define behavior change and what makes it more likely.
  • Describe specific skills that support behavior change, namely the OARS method and gentle guidance.
  • Explore the common roots of harm.
  • Detail how you can uncover why a behavior occurs using the skill of chain analysis.
  • Discuss why we need to balance the effort into learning why a behavior occurs with actually doing something to change it.
  • Examine beliefs, factors, and behaviors that make change less likely and accountability more difficult, as well as how we may counter them.
