Course Information

Course Objectives

In this class, we will:

  • Define consent and kink.
  • Detail what it may be like to be in a kinky space, including general etiquette.
  • Outline steps for negotiating kinky play using the pillars of consent practice as a guide.
  • Attempt to reduce shame around consent incidents and violations* that occur in kink, highlighting common reasons why these occur and what to do to prevent them.
  • Introduce steps of accountability for when consent is violated.

What should I know before I get started?

  • This course includes discussion of kink and sex in plain terms and so it is intended for an adult audience only. We will provide content warnings before detailed descriptions of specific kinky activities.
  • Consent is complex, but as a human being with experiences with other humans, we guarantee you already know a lot about consent. Our goal here isn't to instill one "right" way of thinking, but rather, we hope this course gives you a set of risk-reducing tools that you can actually use, as well as the ability to speak more clearly about the ideas and feelings around the topic of consent that were already growing within you.
  • This course is fairly short and uses a conversational tone to provide just an introduction to the foundations of consensual kink. We do not cover all of the complexities, but we encourage your questions and comments exploring them. Stay tuned for more courses on Teachable or check out our website for live classes that dive deeper into consent and kink.
  • We hope that this course will inspire you to talk with others about what you have learned. Consent is essential in every context, and everyone can learn the skills described here. Please take what you learn and apply it to your life, make adjustments that make sense, and if you're willing, let us know how it goes. We need your help to make consent cultures worldwide, so thank you for taking this first step.

*We will define these terms in the course.
